The PKK was founded in 1974 as a Marxist-Leninist group mostly consisting of Turkish Kurds. The group wants to create an independent Kurdish state in southeastern Turkey and parts of neighboring countries populated by Kurds. The group is known as the PKK because of it’s Kurdish name, Partiya Karkeren Kurdistan. The organization consists of 4,000 to 5,000 people. Throughout their whole existence they have killed over 30,000 people. The Turkish government see’s the Kurdish population, which takes up about one fifth of Turkey (12 million), as a threat to its national security. Turkey has never really respected the Kurds in that there used to be a ban on speaking Kurdish in Turkey. The ban was recently lifted but Kurdish broadcasts in Turkey
