Compare and contrast the language and behaviour of Lady Macbeth in act 1 scene 5 and act 5 scene 1. How would you explain the change in her?
At the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth is introduced as a dominant, controlling wife with an obsessive ambition to achieve kingship for her husband. She receives a letter from her husband telling her about his meetings with tree witches who tell him that he shall be king. After reading she says “dearest partner of greatness” which shows that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have an equal partnership which is uncommon in the 17th Century. Her weak, remorseful and unstable condition is only revealed at the end of the play.
