The First World War was known as the Great War - the “war to end all wars”. This however wasn’t the case, as it then led onto an even more destructive world war but the benefit to this atrocity was the many pieces of literature and prose it inspired. Some of the great poets of the 20th century wrote poems based on the battles, the deaths and the attitudes to war, some positive and uplifting, some based on the hard-hitting and tragic reality.
One of the most famous war poets was Wilfred Owen who was influenced and encouraged by Siegfried Sassoon.
