Shakespeare’s play King Lear features a plethora of characters, each one very different from the others. Two of these characters King Lear and Gloucester, seem to have the same goals, but they went about achieving them in different ways. They were faced with the same basic problems. Their close acquaintances are betraying them. Lear reacts by exiling or cutting off anyone that he suspects, while Gloucester gives his trust to those who he thinks is still loyal. This was a brutal play, filled with human cruelty and awful seemingly meaningless disasters.
