Almost everyone has had nicotine in his or her body at one time or another. Nicotine is the active ingredient in tobacco and once in the body, it acts like the neurotransmitter Achetylcholine (an Ach agonist) and activates nicotinic receptors (Ach’s fast receptors). This eventually leads to the release of dopamine in the reward pathway, which produces the pleasurable feelings that causes people to become addicted. Unfortunately nicotine is the cause of many illnesses like lung cancer, bronchitis, emphysema, and heart disease.
