Morphine’s Chemical Formula and Structure

Morphine’s chemical formula is C17H19NO3. This means that there are seventeen carbon atoms, nineteen hydrogen atoms, one nitrogen atom and three oxygen atoms. The structure morphine is obtained from opium, the juice secreted by the seeds of the poppy. It works on several types of receptors, widely found in nervous tissue. The name used for all drugs that act on these receptors is “opioids”. These other opioids may be natural occurring substances, such as morphine, or made in the laboratory. How Morphine Works Morphine works on receptors in the cell membranes. These are protein-lipid molecules that alter their shape when stimulated to affect molecular changes within cells.
