During the Victorian Age, science became increasingly specialized and skilled. New advances were made in medicine, science, and technology almost daily. Scientists debated the source of diseases, however, the many opinions were so new that the cause was still undetermined. For instance, when germs were first discovered in the 1870’s, some scientists hypothesized that they grew out of liquid, others thought that insects laid them as eggs. Although actions taken to improve health were often founded upon faulty theories, the standard of living was nevertheless improved. By the end of the century Victorians understood the need for antiseptic surgery, anesthetic, and general cleanliness.
