Diego Velazquez was a Spanish painter who was born in Seville, Spain on June 6 1599. He was born of noble Portuguese descent. In his teen years he studied under Francisco Pacheco. Between 1611 and 1617 Velázquez worked as an apprentice to Francisco Pacheco, a painter who became Velázquez's father-in-law. Velázquez was very intelligent and while he was still in his teens he painted pictures that display powerful presence and technical mastery. When he was a student, Velázquez absorbed the most popular styles of painting, resulting, in part, from both Flemish and Italian realism. In 1617 he qualified as a master painter.
