The first written account of a solar eclipse dates back more than 4000 years to October 22, 2137 BC Eclipses appear to be referred to in the Holy Scriptures. The most specific is the example in Amos 8:9, written about 787 BC: "I will cause the sun to go down at noon and I will darken the earth in the clear day." Two centuries later, the eclipse of 585 BC interrupted a six-year war between the Medes and Lydians. This made the armies throw down their arms and made peace that ended the war. On average, there are 237 solar eclipses per century, of which about one-fourth are total.
