"M," the simply titled movie written and directed by Fritz Lang in 1931 has been proclaimed as the movie that started the genre of serial killer and police procedurial movies. Brillantly directed and written, it is the obvious basis for such modern serial killer movies such as "Seven" and "The Silence of the Lambs" because like "M," these movies hide the killer from the viewer for most of the movie and only showed the killer at the right moment when enough suspense had been built up.
