There were mainly two types of protest used during the Civil Rights Movement. The first type of protest was the original form of protest and eventually won equal rights for blacks. This first method is non-violence. Non-violent protest was the original form of protest used, and as history portrays, the more effective form. The other form of protest was militant protest, usually encompassing Black Power advocates, and separationalists. These two forms of protest are encompassing of many different specific protests, however, the division of non-violent vs. militant is important because it defined the two entirely different Civil Rights Movements during the 1950s and 1960s.
