The Effects of Brief Caffeinated Beverage Deprivation on Mood
This study has been conducted by James D. Lane (1997) from Duke University Medical center. The study focuses on the effects of short term caffeine deprivation on mood, withdrawal symptoms, and psychomotor performance. The experiment was done on regular coffee drinkers at midday after either consuming regular amounts of coffee or other caffeinated beverages ad lib or no caffeinated drinks. The volunteers tested on consisted of 5 males and 11 females with a mean age of 32 years and all non smokers. Through self reporting each person’s daily caffeine intake was estimated.
The experiment consisted of two parts: assessment of mood and psychomotor performance. The mood portion of the experiment was conducted by using the Profile of Mood States.
