The subject of abortion has been particularly divisive in our society. At one extreme in this debate are those who maintain that the fetus is essentially tissue belonging to the woman, having no independent humanity of its own. On the opposite side are those who argue that the fetus is a human being, innocent and very dependent upon us, whose rights to life must be weighed against the rights of the woman. In order to gain a picture of the present situation in the abortion debate, a brief view of the legal setting is necessary.
