Reading Response to Butcher Shop
|
“Butcher Shop,” by Charles Simic, can be interpreted a couple of different ways. The way that the reader interprets this poem depends on their background and belief system. One way of reading this poem is that it is of a religious nature, which is weird to think about religion in a poem titled “Butcher Shop”. A second way of reading the poem is to relate it to the Vietnam War. When I was reading the poem I could see both ways to read it, however I was more drawn to the religious aspect of the poem.
The speaker of the poem is just someone who is walking at night and happens to be passing by a butcher shop. I picture the speaker as a middle-aged man who is just taking an evening walk after dinner. I don’t know why I have such a vivid
