Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s life was complicated from the beginning, and the illnesses and addictions that he encountered on the way to adulthood affected his writing very deeply. Coleridge lived during the era when the commonly held belief was that children were better off seen than heard. Coleridge, an only child, was a genius, a child prodigy. However, because society would have him believe that his young age signified having nothing worthwhile to speak of, he kept his unusual thoughts
