The book is written as a group of letters, written by a girl named Celie (who is the main character in the story) and her sister Nettie. The Color Purple is about Celie’s life. In the beginning of the book, Celie was raped by her father and gave birth to two children as a result of it. She never sees her children and believes that her father killed them. Her mother was also very sick and was unable to take care of the family so Celie was forced to cook and clean and “do what her mammy wouldn’t” and can’t.
A man from town wanted to make Nettie his wife, but her father convinced the man to take Celie instead. Celie was then forced to marry him and take care of has children he already had. Celie’s husband known to her only as Mr. __ constan
