The love genre is nothing new; everyone has seen the typical Hollywood romance. Top billing usually goes to big name actors and we know the two leads will end up together. Either the two leads hate each other at first and eventually fall in love, or the two keep getting pushed together by the notion of fate. Though The Princess and the Warrior displays some Hollywood romance traits, there are too many weird twists to make it completely classic. On the other hand, the Hollywood attributes make it impossible to be formalistic. The style of The Princess and the Warrior is definitely not clean cut, which is why I categorized as somewhere in between classicism and formalism.
