Christo was born in Bulgaria on June 13, 1935. He studied at the Fine Arts Academy from 1953-1956 where he studied painting, sculpture, and stage design. He studied briefly in Czechoslovakia, then in 1957 he studied in the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He then began work in Paris in 1958. He started out doing portrait painting but soon created his own style he named ‘empaquetage’ which means packaging. He uses materials like canvas and semi-transparent plastic. He first started out wrapping small objects. He would wrap simple objects like tin cans and paint cans.
