Months after the baseball strike, professional hockey had to show that they were no longer second-class citizens. In a move that probably shocked many, the owners locked-out the players previous to the 1994-95 hockey season and ended up losing over half the season. If the Gretzky trade did not convince Canadians that hockey was business, this sure did.

What happened after the hockey hiccup was that the owners began to shove money in the pockets of hockey players like there was no tomorrow. Between the 1988 and 1998 period, salaries exploded.
In 1988, the highest earning basketball player was the Los Angeles Lakers' Earvin 'Magic' Johnson at $3 million. Ten years later, Shaquille was making $17.
