I. Native Americans- Cultures were complex and diverse. Literary arts were oral. Generations of storytellers recited stories and poems over and over again, seldom in exactly the same way. These stories served many purposes-to entertain, but also to educate the young and to communicate the values of the culture.
II. Exploration- Began with Columbus’s discovery in 1492 and continued into the 1600’s when trend changed from exploration to settlement. Settlers moved to the New World for a variety of reasons, but by far the most important one was religious freedom.
