The Awakening is a story about a woman that tries to break out of the role women are living in towards the end of the 19th century. Victorian Women of that time underwent a regime of oppression and domination, being seen only as appendages of their husband. They were like one of his possessions, required only to entertain, do the household, and raise children. They appeared like shadows of their husbands.
