This article reviews a study which attempts to shed light on cohabitation in Israel - heterosexual couples living together unwed, a phenomenon that has developed dramatically over the last 20 years. What are the characteristics of cohabitation? Why do couples choose this lifestyle? Is this phenomenon a threat to the marriage institution? These questions and others will be discussed in light of the findings of a study done on a random sample of 50 couples who cohabited in three major cities in Israel.
