World War I began on August 4, 1914, as the result of leaders' aggression towards other countries. This aggression was strengthened by rising nationalism of the European nations. Economic and imperial competition and fear of war provoked military alliances and an arms race, which further escalated the tension contributing to the outbreak of war. The war lasted for four years, with approximately 10 million casualties, and called for a peace settlement. Woodrow Wilson came up with The Fourteen Points, but was rejected. The Treaty of Versailles came to replace The 14 Points.
