A Monk living in an early Irish Monastery (before A.D. 900)

During the early years of Christianity in Ireland, many Irish were attracted to the monastic ideal of holiness, poverty and self-denial as practised throughout Europe. Many of the religious followers followed the orders of the abbot of their Monasteries rather than the bishops. St. Enda built the first Irish Monastery on the Aran Islands in AD 490, and I came to live here about 30 years later. We have built simple earthen enclosures, inside of which are wooden churches and small monks cells built of wood or wattle and daub (wicker plastered with mud).
