Puerto Rico is a beautiful island about 1,000 miles southeast of Florida. It forms a boundary between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It covers 3,515 square miles. Puerto Rico includes many smaller islands, however it is one of the largest compared its surrounding islands.
Most of the main island is upland, rising from the narrow southern coastal plains to the Cordillera Central, a mountain range that runs along the island like a backbone. To the north it flattens out into hill country, through which the island’s main river flows down to the much wider northern coastal plain. The two adjoining islands to the east are similarly rugged.
