Hamlet feigns his madness in order to find out how his father, the King’s, death really came about, and to seek revenge. A character pretending to be crazy is not at all a far-fetched idea in literature. In Homer’s Iliad Odysseus faked his madness to avoid going to war, though it did not work. The fact that Hamlet pretended to be mad is extremely apparent throughout the play. There is sanity to his madness though. He can, with this method, potentially discover the truth of his father’s death and claim insanity for his murderous revenge thereafter.
