Henry Clay was born in Hanover, Virginia on April 12th 1777. He studied law in Richond Virginia. He read law under Robert Brooke, Attorney General of Virgina. He moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 1797 where he was licensed to pratice law. He had a good reputation as a lawyer and orator. He became speaker of the state assembly in 1807 and won the election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1811. In Lexington he soon was the leading spokesman of the West. He was leader of the "War Hawks" who pushed for the war with Britian in 1812. He also served on the peace commission that ended the war in 1814.
