The First World War provoked a myriad of responses from all involved, triggering a revival for the fashion in war poetry. The early war verse was dominated by chivalric images of soldiers and messages of proud patriotism, contrasting strongly to the stark, shocking second wave of poetry typified by Owen or Sassoon. In this essay I will compare and contrast the ways two poems in particular, ‘Peace’ and ‘To England-A Note’ present the soldiers in their poetry and decide which has the greater impact.
‘Peace’ was written by Rupert Brooke in 1915. In it he extols war as a blessed opportunity for soldiers to escape the shameful dreariness of home life and find peace in the comparative meaningfulness and personal fulfilment of fighting for one
