As I began reading and doing research into the gender roles expressed in Beowulf, I saw the role of men as the typical masculine figure, and the role of women as the typical feminine figure. It was not until reading various commentaries and critiques of the poem that I began to see that although this gender classification may hold true to a certain degree, there were many aspects that made up these classifications that became evident as I dug deeper into the characters of the poem. I found it difficult to sort out all the information I encountered, as Beowulf in general is such a widely covered topic in literary and historical studies.
