I think that soap operas are a very good way of escaping into another world. They provide a chance to get away from our own problems. However, I do not think that they reflect what goes on in real life. They are filled with bad things going on in people’s lives, which make the audience think that their lives are not so bad after all.
For example, in Coronation Street a while ago, the barmaid Toyah was raped, which turned into a ‘who raped Toyah?’ storyline. Ken Barlow’s estranged daughter was then killed in a car crash, and his friend Alma then became riddled with terminal cancer. Not that long before Alma was held hostage in a supermarket where Mike Baldwin’s brother in-law was shot dead by Curly Watts’ wife.
