In the poem Valentine the writer, Carol Ann Duffy uses an unusual symbol to represent love. This is different from the normal stereotypical image used in such poems. The image used is that of an onion. The writer uses clichés in a way that greatly helps to convey the image and does this effectively, the structure of the poem is also an integral attribute which contributes to it's overall success. The poem opens with the line:
"Not a red rose or a satin heart."
