The Conch
“I’ve got the conch!” This phrase is shouted many times in the book Lord of the Flies written by William Golding. This book is about a group of boys who become stranded on a deserted island. One of the book’s main themes is leadership. The conch shell, a beautiful shell that the boys use as the object one must hold in order to speak during a meeting, symbolizes this theme. At first, order and leadership are present on the island. But little by little, leadership is lost, along with the conch’s power. In the end of the book, when the conch is shattered, leadership is destroyed. This represents the declination of leadership in an uncivilized society.
