Act I, Scene 5, Lines 15-21, 39-55
Lady Macbeth has just read the letter from Macbeth telling her of the witches and the partial fulfillment of the prophecy. Lady Macbeth says, in the first part of this soliloquy, that Macbeth has Glamis and now Cawdor, and he will get what is promised to him. She says what she fears is his goodness. She knows that he is a good man and she think that that will stand in his way and prevent him from doing what is necessary to obtain the crown in the quickest way. She feels he will be a great man because he has ambition and drive, but she thinks that because he isn’t wicked or corrupt like she is, he won’t achieve anything.
