The novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is novel of multifaceted themes that all come into being through numerous references to the original Greek myth of Daedalus. Joyce uses Stephen Dedalus to reflect both Icarus and Daedalus, in the way that Stephen falls like Icarus and in the way that Stephen, like Daedalus, was an artist. As in the original myth, Stephen, like Daedalus, also traps himself in a maze of his own making. And in the end, Stephen realizes, just as Daedalus did, that flight is the only way to solve his problems. The Daedalus myth lays out the basic structure for the novel.
