Gerhardt Richter

Gerhardt Richter is a painter who is known for his abstract paintings to express his own perception of reality. He began in 1962 with the black-and-white photo paintings many of which were blurred with a dry brush, for example, Eight Paintings, 1966.
Gerhardt who grew up in a concentration camp and in communist Germany, saw many things take place, perhaps some things that he should not have seen but did however see. Many of his paintings were of photographs that he took or the media took. He would then paint what he perceived from those pictures and brought them to life.
It almost seems as though he feels that everything (artwork) has already been done, and struggles for a way to find and create a new meaning. Gerhard Richter likes p
