The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and the play Death Of A Salesman by Arthur Miller, both give insight into how an individuals own interpretation and pursuit of the “American Dream” can lead to failure. Jay Gatsby and Willy Loman’s quest for the “American Dream” ultimately leads to failure because both are unable to distinguish the difference between reality and illusion in their lives. The illusions which ultimately lead to Gatsby’s failure are the beliefs that time is reversible and wealth is the definition and key to success.
