I am feeling very uncomfortable this week. My perceptions about my role as a white teacher of minority children have clashed with opposing perceptions held by my students and their families.
While this uncomfortableness is not pleasant, I recognize it as a chance to explore my core beliefs and how they influence my teaching.
The staff at my school works very hard to identify struggling students in order to meet their individual academic needs. My principal leaves no stone unturned in her quest to provide resources for struggling students whether that resource be extra staff, materials, or new ways of teaching that student. Our first priority is teaching all children well, no matter what it takes.
