The battle between consciousness and man’s laws has consistently created controversy from the dawn of civilization, to modern times. The Theban Plays of Sophocles have wonderful examples of the struggle between personal beliefs and social order. The characters in these plays are in a constant struggle between right and wrong, even if what is right to the individual is wrong to the kingdom. A shepherd who would not kill young Oedipus, Antigone who would not allow her brother’s carcass to be disgraced, and Oedipus who needed to learn to live with the tragedy of his life displays individual morals. These three people are well aware of the consequences of their actions, yet would rather be martyrs than go against their beliefs. Soph
