Many wonder, who is responsible for introducing the ideas of sensationalism and yellow journalism to the American people? Was it Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal of the 70’s? Was it Princess Diana’s fiasco with the paparazzi? Maybe it was former president Bill Clinton and his confrontations with Paula Jones and Monica Lewinski. Think again. Sensationalism in journalism originated in 1896 under William Randolph Hearst and his New York Journal and has recently been magnified by the yellow journalists and tabloid publications in today’s society.
