Thomas Jefferson once noted that, “Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens,” (Pasely 477) and, “They are the most vigorous, the most independent, the most virtuous, & they are tied to the country & wedded to its liberty and interests by the most lasting bonds” (Pasely 477). This idea of farmers as, “the most valuable citizens”, is one that is still in the minds of some Americans today. But what farm life was back in the days of Jefferson and what it is today, greatly differ. The idea of the farming life as being the good life is becoming a myth as today’s farmers are leaving the farm for a better life.
