Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American writer, especially known for his minimalist style. A great example of this style is in his short story "Hills like White Elephants." The topic of this story is abortion. The word abortion is never mentioned. It is only inferred. During the time that this story was written, abortion was a word seldom said aloud. Instead, he uses symbolism to get his point across.
One example of symbolism is in the beginning of the story. The story starts out by giving a description of "The American and the Girl" sitting in a railroad station waiting for a train to Madrid.
