The Lakota Sioux were once a proud and powerful people. For hundreds of years they roamed the plains protecting their lands and hunting for migrating game. Throughout this nomadic life style the Sioux based their lives around their religion, art, and war.
The art of the Sioux was recognizable across the Plains and was based around beadwork and painting. Most beadwork and painting was done on tanned hides and articles of clothing such as moccasins and shirts. Perhaps the most recognizable trait of Sioux artwork is their depiction of life painted on large hides. This insured that the history would last and could be transported easily.
