Slaves in the Civil War were subject to terrible conditions. They worked all the day in the South, even under the hottest conditions. If they did a poor job, or made a mistake, they would be beaten severely by their master. They received no holidays, days off or special treatment of any kind for their hard work. All of this and much more made them vie to be freed men, to no longer live the life of a slave. They were granted this after the war ended, when Abraham Lincoln freed them. The former slaves were overjoyed and felt triumphant that they were free at last. However, their happiness was bittersweet because they were “free at last but uncertain of their future.”
