A pre-emptive military attack on Iraq with the intent to oust its leader, Saddam Hussein, has not been sufficiently justified. Yes, it’s true that Hussein is a thug, has some biological/chemical weapons, wants nuclear weapons, and has not conformed to U.N. weapons inspection guidelines. We’ve known all this for ten years and have not been complacent. We have enforced a no-fly zone over Iraq and have severely restricted its ability to rebuild its military by restricting its oil sales. Our own military leaders testified at senate hearings this summer that they believe we have been successful in containing Hussein. Further, there is no evidence of a meaningful connection between Iraq and the terrorist attack against the U.S. last year.
