During the middle Ages, Western Philosophy was developed. The only reason that the philosophy of Rome survived was due to its persuasion on religious thought. It was more part of Christian theology than an independent branch.
The most famous philosopher of the middle ages was Saint Augustine interpreted human history as a conflict between faithful Christians living in the city of God and heretics living in the city of the world. Augustine believed that people of God’s city would have ceaseless salvation, but others within the world’s city would have ceaseless punishment. These ideas weakened religious beliefs in Rome and helped take advantage of the spread of Christianity.
