John Cheever's story "The Swimmer" starts off reasonably normal. An aging Neddy Merrill, the stories protagonist, is lounging out by swimming pool at the home of his friends, the Westerhazys, when a thought occurs to him, “there are so many swimming pools between their house and his own home eight miles away that he can literally, swim home.” However, what starts out as a type of exercise quickly turns into the “Twilight Zone.” Michael Chabon has his review of “The Swimmer” on the website, Salon.com. Chabon enjoys Cheever’s writing and believes that this is Cheever’s greatest stories.
