Many of the original American colonists came to this land to escape religious persecution. Thus, it is not surprising that the Constitution contains provisions for the Freedom of Religion. The 1st and 14th Amendments are the Constitutional basis for the Freedom of Religion. More specifically, the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause are the two guarantees that the Constitution makes concerning Freedom of Religion. The Establishment Clause states that the government will not establish an official state government, while the Free Exercise Clause states that the government will not unnecessarily interfere with religious establishments or the exercise of religion.
