Censorship
Book banning.
These two phrases have always raised my emotions and made me angry.
My strong First Amendment principles probably can be traced back to my time on the high school newspaper during my tenure in high school, as we were a group of renegade students who often ran into censorship troubles from the school. Since then, I have been extremely interested in the topic.
My feelings about censorship were deepened and impassioned further when I met Alice Walker a few years ago when she came to the MSU campus. Ms. Walker has always been one of my favorite authors, and The Color Purple is probably my favorite book of all time.
