Among the prominent and urgent themes of The Glass Menagerie is the difficulty the characters have in accepting and relating to reality. Each member of the Wingfield family is unable to overcome this difficulty, and each, as a result, withdraws into a private world of illusion where he or she finds comfort and meaning the real world does not seem to offer. The story describes the restricted lives of an overly anxious mother, and abnormally timid daughter, and a son trapped in a monotonous warehouse job and in the frustrating situation at home from which his father has disappeared. Throughout the play, we are able to see each family members lack of grasp on reality based on their words and actions.
