By Toni Morrison’s pointed and brutal depiction of a slave’s life in Beloved, one cannot fathom what great strength it would require to live through such affliction. Reconciling with the past and facing the future is the only way to survive such experiences. The past cannot be forgotten, for it will never die. But, the past does not need to be remembered, for remembering is unwise. Morrison shows through Denver and Sethe, that one has got to be able to “lay it all down”, and come to terms with the past to have some kind of tomorrow.
